The Flying Legion edition by George Allan England Literature Fiction eBooks
The characters are largely unbelievable, with a plot to match them. But that's from my perspective, here in 2014, I'll bet that in 1920, when it was published, it was a rollicking adventure story, extrapolating on developments in culture and science. Don't read it for the story, read it for the historical perspective you'll gain. And laugh at the misogyny that magically goes away in the end.

The Flying Legion edition by George Allan England Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Having read Darkness and Dawn in college, I was happy to come across this lost classic. It reads like many from that era--action first and foremost.
It does have a tendency to plod through the setups and the Caucasians seem to be held as superior to the Arabs in this story. I could not understand the constant references to Allah by the "White Men" as if they were Muslims themselves. Something shown up by the many blasphemies they committed in their adventure. There a few nice gadgets that would have been impressive in that era, but in the end this is an adventure story not science fiction. The greed of men of action with no war to fight willing to risk their lives for treasure.
This a classic novel of adventure reflecting the tangled milieu of the Middle East just after World War I. It is a typical flying adventure story reflecting the enthusiasm for air travel and constantly improving technology of that period. The super aircraft of the Flying Legion, The Eagle of the Sky, comes, in effect, from the covers of Science and Mechanics of that period, possibly painted by Frank R. Paul. The gadgetry is typical of science fiction before the term was invented.
If you like first rate derring do, cliff hanging situations, I believe this was a serial in the Munsey magazines, heroic characters fighting down to the last ditch against impossible odds, this is it!
Dull
